When ‘regret’ came up as the topic to do an energy reading & healing on this week I heard the inner narrative say.. this one isn’t for me – I don’t have any regrets!!
Which is very trickster of it really, as once I had delved into the scan lists and followed the energy thread I realised I do have plenty of unexpressed regrets that I’ve avoided because I have misunderstood it’s purpose and definition.
You see regret can be a useful emotional tool, helping us to make sense of our life, guide our future and provide insights that are valuable – but what happens when it goes rogue inside us and becomes a weapon for keeping us in a spiral of indecision and fear and the waters between regret and guilt become muddy and the mood becomes heavy?
OR where we’ve become so convinced it’s a ‘bad thing’ to have regret that it becomes our motto and slogan on all gym wear for the future and we live a life of reckless abandon.
In my personal experience of the pattern that I explore in the energy reading & healing… unhealthy regret (unexpressed and/or suppressed) is usually founded on distrust, is fuelled by fear of the future and keeps us in a constantly abandoned (by self and others) state.

So, a useful thing to get into right relationship with, I think!
I feel like the line between regret and guilt gets blurred and it’s useful to point out the distinction here.. Just in case you are dancing with the nuance as well.
According to a google search…
“Regret is for decisions that had bad outcomes when you had no reason to expect them. Guilt is for decisions that resulted in bad outcomes when you should have expected them.”
If I’ve read this correctly…. We’ve been mixing the two around.. We feel guilty about things that, according to the above definition… we could feel regret for and we fear regretting things because we have mixed it up with guilt…
If you’d done something that led to bad outcomes and you KNEW that’s how it could go – guilt is the appropriate response.
If you’ve done something that led to bad outcomes and you DIDN’T know then that’s something to regret.
